About the Course

Mental Toughness - Level 1 RPT - Full Course

Each course unit is accompanied by a number of questions. Answering the questions ensures that the student has read, watched and listened to the content. Most importantly, these comprehension tests confirm that the student has understood the course unit. Each unit has to be passed in order for the student to progress to the next unit. Accreditation for passing the course is available from several governing bodies. These include internationally recognised organisations such as the Registro Profesional de Tennis (The Registry of Tennis Professionals or RPT). Based in Madrid, The RPT was responsible for the training of Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.Example section of a Mental Toughness course unitMental Toughness ‘The Importance of Rituals’ Preston Park Brighton July 24th 2016 ‘The Importance of Rituals’ A crucial part of Mental Toughness is preparation. The tennis match provides a very good example of how you need to manage yourself to perform at your best. Most of a tennis match consists of not playing tennis. As coaches and players we understandably put all our efforts into playing the point. So we look at technical and tactical aspects. In addition, we also go to the gym, eat the right food and hopefully, get enough sleep.  Only 17.5 % of a tennis match is taken up with playing points  We spend virtually no time on the 82.5% of the tennis match that occurs between the points. Although we can rightly claim that a tennis match is won or lost according to the outcome of points, the match has another dimension that we need to address. This is the role of ‘rituals’.  Dealing with the 82.5% The goal between points is to reset the mind to default and to focus on the next point. There are four stages to this: React to the pointForget the previous point as you walk back to the fence and touch itAs you walk back to the baseline use positive body languageTake two steps into the court and begin to refocusDecide what you want to do and how you will respond to your opponent's shot           (for example, I will hit the serve wide to the forehand and then hit cross court to his backhand)  The 5 steps of the ritual process need to be rehearsed and applied to a match situation. As a trainer, you will need to ‘check in’ with your player to:  See if they are pre-planning the pointSee if there are any ‘dysfunctional narratives’ developing. (This is covered in the ‘Narratives’ unit of Mental Toughness)Help them adapt and personalise their rituals Questions and comprehension In this unit on Rituals and Pre-planning a student will need to answer ‘closed questions’ correctly e.g. multiple choice, yes/no and single answer questions before moving on to the next course unit. They will also need to answer ‘open questions’ e.g. short essay answers to demonstrate that you understand rituals and pre-planning and to describe your experience of putting them into practice.  “What will I need to do to complete a Mental Toughness course?” All Mental Toughness courses involve completing an online course.  Some Mental Toughness courses will be held ‘offline’ on the sportsfield. However all those practical courses will also require completion of an online course.  Different sports will require either an online or an online /offline element in order to complete the course. Different bodies, such as the LTA or RPT will require the same in order to provide full certification. When applying for the course, the student will be provided with the different options that are available.  “What can I do once I have passed the  Mental Toughness course?” You will receive accreditation from the RPT and be sent your certification. You will also be sent any other specific accreditation that you selected before taking and passing the course. You will be able to display these accreditations on any public profiles or documents. “Who is the Mental Toughness course for?” The course is for people who are committed to raising their level of performance. It is designed for coaches and teachers who are looking to do the same.  To run a Mental Toughness course for your organisation, please contact us on the number  below“How do I book, register interest or obtain more information about a Mental Toughness course?” Please contact Dan Travis on: online@dantravis.com  or call 07826068248
